The Cascades Course History

Nestled within 300 acres of pristine rolling terrain adjacent to Lake Bellwood, The Cascades originally opened as the Briarwood Country Club in 1956. It was designed and constructed by a group of World War II veterans, including James Broussard, who envisioned a serene oasis for golf and relaxation with their families. True to its roots, Broussard and many other original members still enjoy membership in the club alongside their children and grandchildren – creating a unique, multi-generational, and very active membership who take great pride in the club’s historic beginnings. The club quickly enjoyed recognition as one of the best courses in East Texas, as well as an outstanding venue for local and regional golf competition.

The club experienced a renaissance in the late ‘90s, when the talent of PGA Tour Player Mark Hayes was enlisted in a multi-million dollar restoration designed to uncover the hidden gem while maintaining the integrity, character and mystique of the original course. The result is a magnificent par-71, 7,142-yard championship layout, opened in 2002, that fits seamlessly into the surrounding terrain.

Thick stands of ancient oak and pine trees frame rolling and undulating fairways, while water features and the towering trees create both strategic diversity and an exhilarating test of golf for players of all abilities. In homage to its reverence for nature, the club was renamed The Cascades to capture the essence of the stunning Lake Bellwood and the numerous springs, waterfalls and streams that cross and surround the club.

With the finest practice facility and learning center in East Texas, members can hone their skills throughout the year.....due to the indoor academy.  Members enjoy the the double-ended driving range; a large short game area featuring multiple putting and chipping greens with bunkers; and an indoor practice facility open throughout the year, providing a wide spectrum of state-of-the-art teaching tools including video swing analysis.
